About the cause:
There are significant barriers that adolescent girls face worldwide in accessing quality education, preventing them the opportunities for leading self-determined, empowered lives that contribute to a healthy world.
In March 2015 Michelle Obama created a global initiative called “Let Girls Learn” to address this issue:
“In many countries, girls face complex physical, cultural, and financial barriers in accessing education.
As a girl grows older the fight to get an education becomes even harder.
Her family must be willing to pay school fees.
She may have a long, unsafe walk to school.
She may be forced to marry.
And she often lacks the support she needs to learn. Yet, we know that educating girls transforms lives, families, communities and entire countries.
Educated girls lead healthier and more productive lives.
They gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to break the cycle of poverty and help strengthen their societies.
It’s time to Let Girls Learn.” - https://letgirlslearn.gov/
As Toni Morrison advised:
“When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.”
The systemic roots of oppressing females throughout history transcend national borders and cultural divides, and the answer to stopping this oppression begins with education. Thanks to successful, effective programs such as The Malala Fund, we can all join in a global, holistic approach to create lasting changes in cultural attitudes towards female rights and empowerment worldwide.
